David MacKay, Rainer Salomaa and Ferdi Schüth
David MacKay, Professor of Natural Philosophy, University of Cambridge, was appointed as Chief Scientific Advisor to the Department of Energy and Climate Change in 2009. His role is to ensure that the Depart-ment’s policies and operations are underpinned by the best science and engineering advice available.
David. MacKay´s book (2008) ”Sustainable Energy – without the hot air” is here available free online.
Rainer Salomaa, Professor of nuclear engineering, Aalto University, Helsinki, will give his views on the consequences of the Fukushima nuclear accident for Helsinki’s energy future.
Professor Ferdi Schüth, Max-Planck-Institut für Kohlenforschung, prepared the German Academy of Sciences report to the Bundes-kanzler’s Ethikkommission on the consequences of the closing of German nuclear plants.
The direct effects of the decision of the closing of German nuclear plants are that the building of coal and gas fired power stations in Germany will be escalated. This will have implications for the EU climate driven energy policy.
